JOJO
Laurel Heights Hospital

Our son Joseph Yee (JoJo) was diagnosed with autism when he was three years old. His self-injurious behaviors and aggression increased when he turned 13 and after that was at an unmanageable level. He was very harmful to himself and others.

He would put holes through our walls and would hit his head/face with both hands to the point that his face would bleed and bruise. He would bite, kick and charge anyone who would try to stop him. Due to the high intensity and frequency of self-injurious behaviors and aggression, he was unable to attend school.

JoJo was admitted to Laurel Heights on June 11, 2008 at the age of 15. He was highly aggressive, had severe self-injurious behaviors and lacked communication skills. It was not an easy decision. As parents wanting the best for our only child, we are glad we did.

It’s been almost a year and a half and JoJo is making great progress. His problem behaviors have decreased by 60%! He is more calm, listens well, is cheerful, happy and he is able to sit down at the cafeteria with the rest of the students.

Laurel Heights saved our marriage and our son. We want to thank all the staff for your caring during this long walk with JoJo and for all of the phone calls. Most of all, thank you for bringing JoJo back into our life.

Syeh, Syeh (thank you in Chinese).
