Stonington Institute’s Autism Center

Stonington Institute’s Autism Center provides innovative assessment, evaluation and treatment interventions to help children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) improve their quality of life. We recognize that there is great diversity in the autism spectrum and that each child’s needs and strengths must be nurtured. Our caring and well-trained team of professionals understands that each child and adolescent has unique gifts to share, and it is our mission to inspire them to maximize their full human potential.

The primary goal of our program is to treat the core autism spectrum disorder features indentified as needing improvement, increasing each child’s quality of life. We also address the management of associated medical issues, co-occurring mental health conditions, dietary sensitivities and pharmacological/non-pharmacological interventions for challenging behaviors. Stonington’s Autism Center is an evidence-based program with a strong foundation in applied behavior analysis (ABA). We utilize structured teaching, sensory integration and occupational, physical, speech and language therapies.

Stonington’s Autism Center is a warm and inviting place for children with ASD to learn and grow. Our intensive residential environment incorporates a high degree of structure throughout the day with routines, schedules and clear physical boundaries. Our small, personalized classes have a low student-to- teacher ratio to allow for sufficient amounts of one-on-one time to meet specific individualized goals.

Family involvement is critical to each child’s treatment, and Stonington’s treatment goals consider the child’s progress within the family structure. Weekly telephone conference calls take place between family members and a board-certified behavioral analyst. We assist parents/ caregivers by educating them, providing them with training and including them as co-therapists. We also help them obtain additional resources and support in their local communities.
